1
Select a playing areat. Since you'll be installing stakes, the court should be located on your own property; if not, you'll need to get the consent of the owner before starting your court. Ideally, the area you choose will be long and flat with no shrubs or trees.
-
2
Install the first stake by hammering it into the ground with your mallet.
-
3
Measure off 40 feet and hammer the second stake into the ground. If you do not have a measuring tape, you can approximate the distance by taking 40 steps, placing one foot directly in front of the other.

4
Get rid of any debris between the two stakes, as well as within a four-foot radius of each stake. This will prevent interference while also making it easier to retrieve the horseshoes after you've thrown them.
