How to Set Up a Horseshoe Pit on the Beach

Chose a fairly level are of the beach as your horseshoe pit. You might want to choose to build your pit on the shingle, as it's pretty hard.

Drive a 36-inch steel rod, 1 inch in diameter, into the ground so that only 14 inches of the rod is above the ground. Make sure that the rod is driven in at an angle that's about 12 degrees from being perfectly up and down.

Loosen the sand around the stake with a shovel. You can go down about 2 inches to 4 inches without affecting the stability of the stake.

Measure 40 feet from the stake, and repeat the process for installing the second stake in your beach horseshoe pit. Make sure you angle that stake away from the first stake.

Create foul lines for each stake. For players who are younger than 18, you can use a 27-foot foul line. For those older than 18, establish a 37-foot foul line.

Check the sand around the stake and angles of the stake as you play horseshoes on your beach horseshoe pit. You might have to readjust the angle of the stake or loosen the sand again during the game.
