The Safest Way to Lace Ice Skates

You need good balance and stability to stay upright on ice skates. Unsteady skaters are likely to end up tripping or falling. Keeping yourself safe on the ice begins with properly tying your laces. The safest way to lace ice skates begins with patience and going through the proper steps to ensure a tight fit. Keep just enough room in the ankle portion of your skate to maintain flexibility for quick stops and starts.

Instructions

    • 1

Loosen all of the laces on your skate, from the top eyelet to the bottom.

    • 2

Slip your foot all the way inside. Adjust your foot so the heel and toes are comfortable before lacing. Grasp the skate tongue and pull it up to ensure a proper fit.

    • 3

Pull the laces tight, beginning with the bottom set of eyelets and moving your way upward. Continue this process, one set of eyelets at a time. Pull the laces taut, but not too tight to cause pain or cut off circulation.

    • 4

Hold tension in the laces once you reach the third or fourth eyelet from the top. Pull the laces tight, maintaining tension throughout the process. Lace the knots up to the top eyelet for ice skates and the second-to-last eyelet for hockey skates.

    • 5

Double knot the laces at the top. Tuck the laces into the sides of your skates to ensure nothing hangs over the outside of your skate. Repeat steps one through five for the opposite skate.
