1
Determine how often you play hockey, and how often you will need to purchase new skates. Your level of play will help determine the type of skate you need. If you are not playing professional-level hockey, you may not need to purchase top-of-the-line skates.

2
Visit a store that sells many different brands of skates. It is very important to try on several brands of hockey skates to figure out what type fits you best. Certain brands have their own features, and it will take a few try-ons to determine what fits your needs and comfort the best.
-
3
Check the price. Many higher-end brands will cost a bit more, but it is up to the skater to determine how much they are going to use the skates, and if it will warrant the cost.
-
4
Consider the options. Decide what options you must have in a skate (removable blades, hard toe covers, etc.), and rule out the skates that don't contain all the options you require.
-
5
Bake the skates. This will give you the best custom fit available because the skate is heated, then placed on your foot and laced tight, allowing the inner portion of the skate to mold to your foot.
