How to Customize Hockey Skates

Hockey players can add a number of features to their skates to make them unique and improve performance. Players on teams that are part of leagues with strict uniform rules should first consult with coaches to ensure they are following team and league regulations. Players in less formal leagues usually don't have restrictions and can add features to their skates.

Add a little lace color. While most hockey skates have white or black laces, skate laces come in a variety of colors that can match team colors. Or, as one former professional hockey player frequently did, you can pick a color that doesn't match any part of the uniform.

Use stickers to add detail. Stickers can include the player's number or a logo that refers to the team name. For example, if the team name is Lightning Bolts, a sticker of a jagged bolt can be applied to the skate.

Add a custom-color skate holder to the boot. Rather than the standard black or white, a custom color that matches the team's primary color can be added when ordering a pair of skates.

    • 4

Contour the skate blade. By having the blades cut in certain ways by the manufacturer or at the hockey shop at a rink, players will gain improved edge control, acceleration, speed, and agility, and regain balance more quickly.

Add inserts to the boot. A full-length, one-piece, flexible thermoplastic insert can address special foot shapes and alignment requirements with a stiff sole to improve skating comfort.
