How to Deke in Hockey

Hockey body control differs from many other sports because of the combination of skating and stick handling. When a forward is going for a shot on goal, there isn’t a lot of opportunity to dance around the goalie; momentum limits your movement and defenders will pummel you if you are indecisive. A deke is a basic move where the player fakes a wrist-shot with one side of the stick, then shoots with the opposite side. Forwards use a variety of dekes to quickly fake out the goalie and gain an extra half-second when placing the puck.

Instructions

    • 1

Skate towards the goal with the puck tightly controlled by your stick. Move your body towards one side of the goal to set up the fake.

    • 2

Hold the puck steady with one side of the stick, threatening the wrist-shot on one side of the net.

    • 3

Cut back across the goal towards the other side of the net, accelerating as you cross the goalie’s face. Simultaneously switch the puck to the opposite side of the stick.

    • 4

Shoot the puck with a quick wrist-shot towards either the opposite side of the goal or between the goalie’s legs (known as the five-hole).
