How to Make Homemade Goalie Gear

Hockey goalies are the last line of defense to protect their team's opportunity to win the game. To play their position to the fullest, goalies wear a variety of protective pieces such as the goalie mask, gloves and chest protector. Each of these items play a vital role in protecting the goalie's body against the punishment of competition. However, the cost of a goalie's playing gear can be expensive. Using items from other sports and additional home products will allow you to create your own goalie gear to save money.

Instructions

  1. Baseball Gear Used As Hockey Goalie Pads

    • 1

Strap catcher's shin guards to both of your legs. While catcher's pads are not as long and wide as the goalie's pads, they will protect your legs while you are on your knees and moving across the ice. The shin guards also will protect your legs when hit with the puck.

    • 2

Place the chest protector over your body. While not as thick as the chest pad used by hockey players, it will add some resistance to the puck hitting your chest. For additional padding wear a sweatshirt with two or three t-shirts under it.

    • 3

Slide the catcher's mask over your face. While it does not offer as much protection as the full face mask that hockey goalies wear. It will protect majority of your head from the blows that can come from high speed shots. For additional protection wear eye goggles under the catcher's mask.

    • 4

Place the first basemen's glove on your catching hand. A first basemen's glove has a deeper catching pit which will help in securing the puck. You can also use a catcher's glove.

Additional Household Items Used As Goalie Pads

    • 5

Inset pillow cushions into a large pair of sweat pants to act as goalie leg pads. Use nylon string to tie the pads into place around the legs of the goalie so they do not shift or move during play.

    • 6

Use a life vest to act as a chest protector for the goalie. Wear a large sweat shirt over the life vest for additional padding and protection against the oncoming pucks.

    • 7

Use thick gardening gloves to take the place of goalie gloves and protect your hands from the sticks and pucks that can cause injury during the game. For additional comfort you can wear a pair of smaller gloves under the gardening gloves.

    • 8

Use a bicycle helmet to protect your head from the puck. Along with protective goggles, the helmet will help you avoid serious damage to your face in the same sense of a goalie mask.
