How to Make Goalie Pads Taller

Hockey goalie pads have a fixed length, with an additional section called a thighrise. Permanently modifying a goal pad is a costly endeavor, often equaling the cost of new pads. Additionally, many permanent modifications extending the pads' length beyond 38 inches makes use of the pads illegal. However, all goalie pads have a provision for an attachment called a thighboard, which extends the length of the pad while providing additional knee and thigh protection.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the leg pad around, so you are facing the leg channel. Note the faux leather tab just above the knee area with multiple perforations.

    • 2

Align the perforations on the thighboard with the concave side facing you. Tie a knot at one end of the skate lace. Push the skate lace through the first hole on the thighboard's lace hole and the matching hole on the tab.

    • 3

Continue lacing up and through the holes on the tab and thighboard until the board is firmly attached.

    • 4

Cut the excess lace off after lacing the final holes. Tie a knot at this end to secure the thighboard. You should have enough lace left to repeat the process for the other pad.

    • 5

Put the pad on as you normally would. Loop the elastic strap around your thigh. Adjust the slides on the straps until the board fits to your preference.
