Create a Unique Street Luge Board
-
1
Choose wooden frames over metal or fiberglass when you build your first street luge board. Wood can be manipulated easily and costs less than other street luge board materials.
-
2
Cut out a street luge board form that is slightly shorter than your body height. Your knees should be bent slightly when you are laying down on the board. The form should include a head rest, a wide torso section and a a foot rest.
-
3
Line the bottom of your board's torso section with a thin layer of light metal. This lining helps prevent bowing of your street luge board during races.
-
4
Make your street luge board more comfortable by padding the torso section. Many street lugers use the services of a carpenter to stuff and upholster this section with lightweight materials.
-
5
Construct a head rest that is sufficient for the size of your riding helmet. You should build this section at the width of a typical motorcycle helmet to accommodate safe use.
-
6
Attach bicycle foot pedals to the end of your street luge board to lock your feet in. These pedals should feature a plastic or metal strap that keeps feet in place while riding.
-
7
Buy large skateboard wheels to keep your board upright during the street luge. Most luge boards require at least 82 centimeter wheels to allow for quick movement down the hill.
-
8
Wrap padding around the ends of your head rest and foot rest to absorb impact from collisions. This padding can be made of similar material as your torso cushion. This end padding helps decrease damage from head-on collisions with course barriers.
-
9
Align hand grips around the halfway mark as you build a street luge board. You can utilize rounded pieces of metal that extend out 6 inches from the torso section. Test out grip placement by laying down on the board before drilling grips.
