Post-Marathon or Triathlon Depression
-
Reasons
-
According to the article "Life After the Marathon," post-marathon or triathlon depression is normal and common. This feeling of "letdown" is normal after completing any major goal. The best way to combat this depression is to take care of yourself and rest in the week after the marathon or triathlon.
Time Off
-
Feeling like there is a void is something almost every runner experiences after a marathon or triathlon. Instead of pushing yourself to find a new goal or even to run again, take time to do things that are fun. Take a break from running if you really want . If you are going to run, do it for fun.
Other Activities
-
Training for any major event takes you away from your friends and family and probably a lot of other activities you were involved in. Go visit with your loved ones, take up a hobby, go out of town, go to the movies or just sleep in. Enjoy this much-deserved rest and the down time as much as you can.
Considerations
-
In an article on "Depression Basics" on depression.com, depression can vary from person to person. Make sure to monitor how you feel on a daily basis. If you feel "down" for more than two weeks, consult your doctor to make sure you're handing yourself "post-event" accordingly.
Solution
-
Resting is usually the best medicine after a big event. Part of the letdown after completing your marathon or triathlon is the fact that you accomplished this amazing feat. Waking up and not training or having to prepare for the event can leave a small space. Once you are ready, begin to make goals for yourself again.
