Designed by Honda as an improved version of its XR185, the XR200R debuted in 1980 with an air-cooled, four-stroke, SOHC, two-valve engine. Apart from an experiment with a four-valve engine in the 1984/1985 model, the XR200R continued to carry the two-valve engine throughout its production run. A six-speed transmission and kick-start also remained through 2002.

According to an October 2009 issue of Dirt Rider Magazine, "1986 to 1991 suspension internals are vastly superior to 1993 and later short-travel models." But the publication notes that these were "bikes that appealed to people who didn't want to work on them." As of 2010, XR200Rs sold in the $500 to $2000 range, depending on year and mechanical condition, according to Dirt Rider magazine.
