The first decision you will have to make is how much money you can afford to spend on a dirt bike. The budget you set will determine whether you get a new bike or used, a large bike or small. It is important to have a budget that is adequate to land you the right dirt bike, but without extending your resources too much.

After you’ve established your budget, think about whether or not you plan to use the bike purely for riding off-road, or if you will also be using it on the streets. If you will also be using the dirt bike on public roads, then you will need to make sure that the bike is street legal in your area, which usually means head/tail lights and turn signals.

Think about your body size. This will determine the size of the frame that you will choose. Dirt bikes come in a variety of sizes, from mini dirt bikes built for small children, to roaring monsters that should only be ridden by professionals. Pick a frame that is appropriate to your body size that you can ride comfortably.

Ask yourself how much experience you have riding dirt bikes and then think about how much power your bike should really have. Those who are new to riding should probably start with a 125 model, and then work their way up to the 250 dirt bike. Models larger than 250 should be reserved for advanced experts.

If you are a specialist, make sure the back matches your expertise. Some people specialize in endurance racing, while others specialize in trail racing or jumping, or any number of other specialties. If you are looking at a dirt bike that was designed for a specific purpose, make sure it matches your intended use of the bike.
