Differences in 450R & 450ER Spindles

The Honda CRF450R motorcycle and TRX450ER all-terrain vehicle are no strangers to racing courses. The vehicles are versatile and efficient. However, these vehicles exhibit several vital differences in mechanical design, which need to be considered when replacing spindles.
  1. Model Differences

    • Honda's CRF450R model four-stroke motocross is a two-wheel vehicle. The TRX450ER is a four-wheel vehicle. These two model types use the space for engines and mechanical components differently. The designs make specific requirements for spindle configuration.

    Design Differences

    • The CRF450R has a kick-starter spindle that requires only 15 components, ranging from kick-starter ratchet springs to an idle gear collar and more. Honda's TRX450ER model ATV has an electric start option in addition to the kick-start option. The kick-starter spindle contains more than 20 components. While these include similarly named items, such as an idle gear collar and kick starter ratchet spring, the components used in this model have different sizes and specifications.

    Part Construction

    • The two models' kick-starter spindle rods have subtly different constructions. The CRF450R spindle is a uniform piece, with gear teeth at either end and a pair of offset holes in the shaft. The TRX450ER starter spindle has a collar near the middle of the shaft and no additional holes.
