How to Teach Your Child to Run Fast

Running is an activity that encourages children to further their enjoyment of playing outdoors and partaking in age-appropriate organized sports. As with all physical activities and sports, such as shooting a basket or dribbling a ball, running technique needs to be practiced and developed. With the proper training, a child's running skills, technique and coordination will result in faster speeds.

Instructions

    • 1

Create speed drills that will make training fun for your child. Drills can include a timed obstacle course, speed games or races against other children. Use a stopwatch occasionally to time the drills and show the child's progress.

    • 2

Work on developing good coordination which will maximize the child's capability. Running drills, agility ladder training and sharp turn practice should be performed at a slower pace and then increased as coordination develops.

    • 3

Teach and train your child proper running form and technique. With proper form, the child should stand tall, and his arms should be bent at a 90 degree angle and swung from the shoulders only. Each step should be a quick lift of the foot with the heels lifting as soon as the forefoot touches the ground.

Quit when the child tires. An exhausted child will not likely want to practice further.
