How to Play for an AAU Team

Physical activity is important for good health. Participating in sports with others on a regular basis helps develop good athletic habits. The Amateur Athletic Union is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting amateur sports and physical fitness among adults and children. AAU members athletes can choose from one of several sports, including baseball, basketball, diving, football, gymnastics, hockey, martial arts and swimming. AAU teams participate in regionals, district and national championships, along with invitationals and other events. Before playing, you must obtain a membership directly through the AAU.

      Review the AAU Membership options (see Resources). AAU offers individual or club memberships. If you are registering yourself or your child, you want to purchase an individual membership.

      Register for an an AAU membership (see Resources). You'll need to create a login username and password. Once you create the username and password, log in using these credentials. The login page is located on the left-hand side of the page.

      Access the "Athlete Application" after logging in. Enter your information, including your membership term and sport that you would like to play and whether or not you have health insurance. If you do not have insurance, you will be required to purchase a plan before playing on a team (see Resources).

      Locate a local team to play for on the map provided by the AAU (see Resources). Contact your local team directly to join. The local coach will verify your membership and enroll you into the selected team. Contact several local teams in your area in the event that your first choice is full.
