Sports Management Summer Programs

There's more to game night than ESPN highlights. Beyond the glitz and sweat, there are the business and politics of sport. The North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM) deems management, leadership, organizational structures, fund raising, law and sports marketing all but a part of its domain in supporting professionals in the field of "sport, leisure and recreation." With so many responsibilities, the industry requires the skill and expertise of more than athletes. There are summer programs that can enhance the skills of any student looking to advance in the field of sports management.
  1. Julian Krinsky Camps & Programs' Career Builders Internships

    • The Krinsky Program is an excellent way for high schoolers to get ahead this summer.

Just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Julian Krinsky Camp offers a Career Builder Internship experience to rising high school juniors and seniors interested in sports management. The sports management summer internship is the most popular of the Krinsky internship programs. The longest session lasts from the end of June to mid-August. Students are welcome to apply as early as September for the following summer sessions.

Interns work on a 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. schedule, Monday through Friday. Each intern's day-to-day responsibilities could include assisting professional athletes, working with advertisers, team administration or ticket sales, working on NBA Draft night, and handling game-day preparations.

Evening activities are coordinated by the program for participating students, but each individual is trusted to budget their food and leisure spending wisely.

Although interns are paid a $125-per-week stipend, housing fees at the University of Pennsylvania range from $4,425-$9,850 as of 2010. To apply, students must submit a copy of their school transcript, two letters of recommendation, $150 nonrefundable application fee and an $800 deposit to be applied to the program cost.

UCLA Sports Marketing & Management Institute

    • UCLA offers collaborative project-based summer learning experiences for students interested in sports management.

UCLA's Anderson School of Management employs the Harvard Business School case study method of learning to deliver a comprehensive experience to UCLA undergraduates and degree holders as well as visiting college students and graduates.

The Sports Marketing and Management Institute takes place from mid-June through the end of July. The program supplements lecture and workshop instruction from UCLA faculty with expert advising and experiential off-site learning in the city of Los Angeles.

Students work in collaborative groups on project-based ventures with a company in the sports business--all of which, UCLA maintains, are major players in the industry. Program fees range from $3,995 for UC undergraduates to $4,495 for visiting students as of 2010. The UC undergraduate rate includes students attending another UC institution, unless the student's degree is awarded in the spring semester before the start of attending the Institute.

Financial aid and is available to UCLA students, but outside aid might be available from any visiting student's home institution. UC credit is available, however, to any student within the University of California system.
