The return of serve is typically a defensive shot designed to move the server from the center of the court to one of the corners.

Instructions

      Position yourself at mid-court, 6 to 8 feet in front of the back wall.

      Stand on the balls of your feet.

      Point your toes and shoulders to the front wall.

      Bend your knees and crouch comfortably.

      Watch the server for a sign of where the serve is going.

      Focus your eyes on the ball.

      Judge where the ball is going once it leaves the server's racquet.

      Take a quick step or two, if needed.

      Brace yourself to hit a return shot. Most opponents will attempt to serve to your backhand.

      Go for an offensive shot if the opportunity presents itself.
