1
Select a base for your medieval centerpiece. A large, medieval-designed pewter goblet can be used as the base if you want a compact centerpiece for a romantic dinner for two. You can also simply choose a low-profile basket.

2
Line the bottom of your base with a substrate of your choice. Straw is a good choice, as it symbolizes the old straw-covered floors of castles and stables of the Middle Ages. Use just enough substrate that will add touches of texture to show through the items in your centerpiece creation.

3
Fill your base with an assortment of items that correspond with your idea of medieval times. Most classically, a sprig of deep-purple artificial or real grapes is pretty and commonly used as edible centerpieces during medieval times. You can also include a crystal ball and other fortune-telling devices, since this era included an array of mind-readers and soothsayers.

4
Place a candle at each side of your filled base to create a balanced centerpiece for your table. Simple white or yellow beeswax candles are adequate, as they were most common and easy-to-obtain in the Middle Ages. When lit, the light flickers off of your centerpiece to add to the medieval ambiance.
