How to Play Goalie in Roller Hockey

In addition to having the proper gear, a roller hockey goalie must possess speed, calm, and experience in the cage. This simple set of instructions is merely a foundation of basic skills for new goalies to begin working on.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear proper gear every time you play goalie. This includes a helmet with face protection, a chest protector, shoulder protection, an arm blocker, a goalie glove and stick, an athletic cup (for men) and leg protectors. Not only do these items protect you, but they also protect the goal and increase your courage.

    • 2

      Stretch thoroughly before you play.

    • 3

Position yourself in the center of the goal cage, just outside the goal line.

    • 4

Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and your knees parallel. Your weight should be on the balls of your feet, with your knees slightly bent.

    • 5

Keep your chest up and lean forward from the waist. Your back should be straight and your head up.

    • 6

Have your glove open, facing the puck, with your arm blocker up and ready.

    • 7

Hold your stick between your skates and just in front of you, with the blade flat to the ground.

    • 8

Keep your eye on the puck at all times.

    • 9

Play the puck, not the shooter.

    • 10

      Anticipate shots.

    • 11

Use your glove and blocker to knock down high shots.

    • 12

Use your skates, leg pads and stick to block low shots.

    • 13

Control the puck after you block it. Fall on it, or cover it with your glove or leg pad.

    • 14

Pass the puck to one of your teammates, off to the side, after the other team has cleared away.
