Determine the model and type of rowing machine you are using. The following steps provide a general guide to all rowing machine monitors. However, the exact buttons and interface apply to Concept2's PM3 monitor, which populates the large majority of gyms, boathouses and college recreational centers. Different models and brands vary slightly in interface. They all provide the ability to keep track of distance, time and power output. However, some models provide additional features such as the ability to track calories burned, interface with a computer or generate force curves.

Touch any button on the face of the monitor, or begin to row on the machine to turn on the monitor. The monitor will display an introduction screen which provides a "Select Workout" option.

Touch the button on the monitor corresponding to the "Select Workout" prompt. The monitor will display several workout varieties grouped by either time or distance and further segmented by interval training or continuous.

Decide which option fits your workout goal, and press the corresponding button. The monitor will give you the option to set either a time or a distance for your workout.

Input the desired time or distance using the plus and minus buttons. You will also have the option of inputing rest time if you have chosen to complete an interval workout.

Touch the button that corresponds with the checkmark on the screen, and begin your workout. The monitor will now track your progress during the workout. You have the option of viewing your progress in several different display modes and unit varieties. Press the "Display Mode" button to cycle through different displays, and press the "Change Units" button to cycle through various units. You can change the display and units at any time before, during or after your workout.
