Irish Rugby History

Rugby in Ireland has a long tradition in both the international and domestic game that stretches back to the 19th century, and 2009 proved to be a successful year in both club and international rugby in Ireland.

  1. Dublin University

    • The first organized rugby football club was formed at Dublin University in 1854 by students who learned the game at English schools.

    Two Rugby Unions

    • Between 1874 and 1879, two rugby unions vied for control of rugby in Ireland. The Irish Football Union controlled the game in Leinster, Munster and parts of Ulster, while the Northern Football Union controlled rugby in the majority of Ulster.

    The First International Game

    • In February 1875, Ireland played England, marking Ireland's first international rugby match.

    Irish Rugby Football Union

    • In 1879, the Irish Football Union and the Northern Football Union merged to create a single body to control rugby in Ireland called the Irish Rugby Football Union.

    2009

    • The year was a great success for Irish Rugby, with the national team remaining unbeaten in the 6 Nations championship, giving them their first 6 Nations grand slam in 61 years.

    Bryan O'Driscoll

    • Leinster center Bryan O'Driscoll captained Ireland to their 2009 6 Nations victory and was named the fans' player of the season for scoring tries in four of Ireland's five victories.
