How to Goal Kick in a Rugby League

Rugby, or rugby football, began in Britain at Rugby School, although the precise nature of its origin is shrouded in mystery, according to De Montfort University professor of social history Tony Collins. What is clearer is that in 1895, in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, a new version of the game was formed. Rugby league arguably went on to eclipse its older brother in terms of popularity. However, you kick a goal the same way in both types of rugby.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the kicking tee on the ground on a flat area of the pitch.

    • 2

Place the ball vertically on the kicking tee so that one end points upward.

    • 3

Step back a few paces -- three to seven, according to rugby coaches Tony Biscombe and Peter Drewett -- and look at the goal posts. Prepare mentally to take the kick. Envision the ball flying through the air, straight toward the gap between the uprights and over the bar.

    • 4

Run forward in a controlled way toward the ball, keeping your balance and your head down. Plant your non-kicking leg firmly beside the ball so it can support your weight.

    • 5

Swing your kicking leg at the precise moment, aiming for the ball's "sweet spot," which is about a third of the way up the ball. Ensure your instep or big toe comes into contact with the ball, propelling it forward and upward.
