1
Learn the basics of skiing. It's important to learn how to ski as young as possible. Most professional skiers have been practicing since they were old enough to walk; the longer you delay your start, the more difficult it will be to get to the required level of expertise.
-
2
Absorb as much as possible from skiers more advanced than you are. Watch every televised skiing event, from the Olympics to regional qualifying events, you can. When you're not skiing at local ski facilities, watch what other skiers are doing and don't be afraid to ask questions.
-
3
Join a school ski team or a local ski club. Not only will participating in group practices help refine your skills, you'll likely compete as a team, which will introduce you to the challenges of professional skiing. Some ski resorts also have clubs or teams, which may require an exhibition run before you're accepted.
-
4
Hire an experienced ski instructor. One-on-one instruction is vital when you're attempting to hone your skills to the level needed to participate in the sport professionally. Many former pro skiers now teach, and their insights into the skill needed to participate at the pro level will prove invaluable.
-
5
Begin participating in local ski events. Even if you're participating in some events as a team member, contact local ski facilities to learn of other events in which you might compete. The more you compete, the easier it becomes, and the experience you'll gain will help you reach your goal.
-
6
Participate in Olympic ski team qualifying events. One of the surest ways of having the skills and name recognition to turn pro is by participating in the Olympics. Contact the United States Ski Team to find out the procedures, which change slightly from year to year. Generally, you'll have to make your way through several qualifying events before you're eligible to try for a spot on the Olympic Team.
-
7
Attempt to qualify for several professional skiing events. There are several ways to qualify for the professional tour events. A solid performance at the Olympics is one way. Winning one of a number of smaller second-tier events is another. You can also apply to participate in a qualification run at one of the pro events. Most of the events take place in Europe, so the ability to travel is required. But if you're unable to obtain an invitation otherwise, the qualifying run is your best choice.
