Smith Ruckus Sunglasses | Review
These things look fast. And if they make you look fast, they make you go fast. That’s how these things work, right? Well, yeah, that is (sort of) how the Smith Ruckus work and is definitely the reason we’ve included them in the Mpora Backcountry Ski Guide.
So how do these sunglasses make you go faster if it’s not simply by making you look like a 100 metre sprinter lining up on the start line of the Olympic Final? Explanation time. It comes down to breathability, something the Smith Ruckus has an impressive amount of.
We found that no matter how hard we were pushing, whether we were ski touring, running, or climbing, these things consistently provided fantastic airflow – fighting off the dreaded fogging up of the lens as a result. Less time stopping to “defog”, more time charging round the mountain. See, we weren’t kidding about that speed thing.
A word now on the ChromaPop lenses that worthy of a review in themselves. It’s this lens technology that allows you to see more detail than you normally would. It’s easy to be sceptical of promises like this but, just like Oakley Prizm and Julbo Reactiv technologies, ChromaPop really does enhance your vision to an impressive level.
That same lens provides fantastic peripheral vision (some of the best we’ve seen, in fact). It does this with its wraparound design. Those of you who prefer to ski in sunglasses will love the amount of peripherals available here, you really can’t see the edges of the sunglasses.
This wraparound design most importantly protects you from any glare bouncing into the sides of the glasses – essential for any high altitude missions where the glare of the sun is intensified.
Additional features that make these a great pair of ski touring glasses include some nifty non-slip features, including grippy and adjustable nose and temple pads. This means you’ll have to be truly pinning it to give these sunglasses even a hint of shake.
