How Much Toe Should Hang Off a Snowboard?

For beginning snowboarders, getting the right fit for boots, board, and bindings is a crucial foundation of success. If you are starting out as a snowboarder, and your boots overhang the board by more than about 2 inches, you can get a better fit by setting higher stance angles and getting a wider board.

Instructions

Set higher stance angles. A common stance for beginners is known as the forward stance, because the binding angle in the front is about 15 degrees higher than in the back (for example, plus 20 degrees/plus 6 degrees.) By switching to a back binding angle that is about the same as the front (a so-called duck or mirror stance), you can reduce toe drag. For example, back and front bindings can be set at plus 15 degrees/minus 15 degrees.

Adjust your bindings. Slide the vertical holes or slots (depending on the type of binding) down one or two settings to reduce the amount of toe overhang. If you also have heel drag, you can adjust the settings to even out the drag on both sides.

Try a wider board. Some big-footed riders simply can't fit their feet comfortably on a narrow board. If this is you, try out different board widths to find one that suits your style and skill level while offering a good fit for your foot size.
