How to Calculate the Proper Snowboard Length

Not all snowboards are created equal, but instead they are specially designed by manufacturers to fit people of different sizes, shapes and abilities. You should always make sure that you have the proper equipment for any outdoor activity. Using the appropriate sized snowboard is important for ensuring that you get the most out of your snowboarding experience. Having a snowboard that is too big, too small, too heavy or too light might cause you to lose control while riding, which can lead to injuring yourself or others.

Consider the type of snowboarding you will be performing with the board. If you will be using your board mostly for doing spins and tricks, you should consider getting a smaller board that is more flexible than a board you would use for regular mountain use. Conversely, if you will be using your snowboard on large mountains where you will need to control your turns at high speeds, a larger, heavier board will be more appropriate.

Look on the back of a snowboard to find the ranges of weight the board will best support. You should find a board that lists your weight somewhere near the middle of the weight ranges listed. If your weight falls near the lighter end of weight listed, the board might be to stiff, and if your weight is closer to the heavier weight range, the board might be too flexible and might even break.

Determine if your height should be a factor in calculating your proper snowboard length. If you are both tall and light, you may want to consider using a board that is longer so that your height will compensate for your weight. If you are both shorter and heavier, you may want to use a shorter board so that you will have more control.

Select a board that will complement your gender. In general, women’s center of gravity is lower, and they have a lower body mass than men. Most snowboards are specifically divided into men’s and women’s for this reason, so select a snowboard based on your gender.

Decide if you will be using your board for freestyle riding or free riding. Freestyle riding is best done with a shorter board so that you can turn and move more easily and precisely. On the other hand, if you are a free rider, you will benefit from a longer board that will allow you to ride across deeper snow at faster speeds.
