How to Get Noticed in Soccer Tryouts

Soccer tryouts are a competitive event with limited opportunities to demonstrate your capabilities. The coaches instruct players through several drills and test different skills before making selections for the team. Gaining recognition at tryouts increases the chances of making the cut and earning an opportunity to play on the team. The coaches watch the tryouts carefully and select players who demonstrate a fundamentally sound performance throughout the entire event; showboating gets you noticed, but solid fundamentals get you on the team.

Instructions

    • 1

Begin conditioning several months before the tryouts. Run at least 10 miles each week to build endurance and lung capacity. Soccer tryouts require extensive running throughout the event and coaches take note of the best conditioned athletes.

    • 2

Develop your ball-handling skills before the tryouts. Practice dribbling through cones, passing accurately and changing direction quickly. Dribble with confidence and increase your foot speed by running sprints and running through tire courses.

    • 3

Study every position before the tryouts. Although you may desire a specific position, expanding your knowledge base to encompass all positions prepares you for every request during the tryout. Practice blocking as a goalie, defending in the backfield and passing as a forward.

    • 4

Demonstrate accuracy by placing the ball in different quadrants of the goal on command. Kick a high powered ball to the top right corner, bottom left corner, center and other specific points. Skilled shooters typically gain notice at tryouts.

    • 5

Support the other players at the tryout in a team-oriented fashion. Although you are competing for a spot on the team, working together demonstrates your leadership ability, good sportsmanship and willingness to contribute as a team player.
