Soccer Techniques for Kids

Balance and kicking the ball are the first lessons kids should learn when playing soccer. Soccer kicking techniques require coaching and practice. Practice should focus on fundamentals of the sport and body coordination. Soccer helps teach kids how to work as a team to achieve an end result and maintain a level of general fitness. Techniques can be practiced in a gym or outdoors on the practice field.
  1. Balance

    • It will seem unnatural to kids at first to try and kick the soccer ball at different angles. Balancing themselves before controlling or kicking the ball should be practiced before attempting to play the game. Practice on a grass field to prevent any injuries if the kids fall. Gently roll or throw the ball toward each kid and let him practice balance in preparation to control or kick.

    Ball Control

    • Learning to control the ball at a young age will improve a kid's technique and allow time to pass or shoot at the goal. The child will feel confident in possession of the ball once balance and ball control are mastered. Throw or roll the ball toward each kid and let him practice stopping and controlling the ball with both feet, head, chest and thighs. Practice only with the feet if they are very young.

    Kicking

    • Kicking the ball is a fundamental soccer skill that requires practice. Passing the ball with the instep of the kicking foot is the best way to start. Once balance and control have been achieved, to some degree, the kids will be ready to attempt passing the ball. Roll or throw the ball to each kid and let him practice three basic moves--balance in anticipation of the ball, control using as few touches as possible and the kicking pass with the instep. Accuracy and technique will improve with practice.
