Soccer Referee Pregame Checklist
-
The Field
-
It is the responsibility of the referee to ensure the sidelines, penalty spot, penalty area and center circle are appropriately marked. The referee also must make sure the corner flags are in place and that there are no dangerous materials or foreign objects, such as bottles, on the field of play.
The Goals
-
The referee ensures the structure of the goals is in perfect condition. The crossbar must not be sagging, the posts properly aligned on the goal line and the goal must be centered in the goal area. The referee must make sure there are no rips or holes in the netting and that the nets are securely fastened to the goal.
The Teams
-
The referee must check to ensure both teams are wearing a complete uniform and not wearing disallowed or prohibited objects, such as jewelry, casts or splints. Such checks are done to protect players from both teams from injuries that such objects can cause in a collision--and identify individuals not fit to take part in the game.
Referee gear
-
Referees have a duty to bring all of the things they might need during the course of a match onto the field of play. These items include their whistle, watch, score card and pencil. A copy of the appropriate rules books, such as the FIFA Laws of the Game, SYSA Referee Policies and Procedures, and Game Formats, should also be carried on the field in case the referee needs to check the regulations regarding unusual incidents that occur.
