Tips on a Soccer Sweeper
-
Defensive Heading
-
The sweeper will be expected to win vital headers in defensive areas. A defensive header is to head the ball as high and as far away from your goal as possible. Head the ball out to either side of the goal, rather than into areas directly in front of the goal. You do not want to present the opposition with an easy chance. Head the ball out for a throw or corner if you are unsure if any of your teammates are around you. Practice heading long distances in the air to improve defensive skills.
Tackling
-
The sweeper must be able to perform the perfect tackle. A penalty kick may be conceded if the tackle is not timed correctly and a foul is given inside the penalty box. The sweeper will be making many tackles in her own penalty area as she plays deep in her own half of the pitch. Jockeying an attacker is a useful method of slowing up the game and allowing your teammates to get into position. Practice this move by allowing an attacker to run at you with the ball. Stand your ground and do not let him pass. Time the tackle so as not to commit a foul.
Reading the Game
-
Experience helps a sweeper determine what move the opposition will try to make. You must be able to analyze the game and prepare for your opponent's next move. As the sweeper, you need to think quickly and make the correct decisions both defensively and offensively. Passing the ball from defensive positions can create a counter-attack for your team. The sweeper must be able to pass the ball accurately and preferably along the ground. The sweeper should talk to his teammates and organize the defenders and midfielders. It is a good position to play if you are the captain of the team.
