Softball Umpire Programs in Ohio

The right training is important for prospective softball umpires in the state of Ohio. A full skill set allows umpires to work both regular and fastpitch games, at the high school and collegiate levels, as well as Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of American tournaments. Training will bring students up to speed on umpire techniques, proper game mediation, and the differences between regular and fastpitch play, as well as familiarize future umpires with both ASA and Ohio High School Athletic Association rules.
  1. ASA Umpire School

    • The Amateur Softball Association of America runs an annual umpire school at a number of locations across the country, including Columbus, Ohio. The schools are two-day intensive sessions run by a team of three experienced softball umpires. ASA Umpire School sessions never have a student-instructor ratio of more than 25 to one, in an effort to insure that each student receives one-on-one attention and instruction for each teaching point throughout the two-day period. The Columbus session for 2010 took place in January, though will return in 2011.

    ASA Fastpitch

    • The Amateur Softball Association of America sponsors a once-a-year fastpitch softball school in Cincinnati, Ohio. Fastpitch softball is a type of softball played almost exclusively by women in the Unite States, and is so called because players are permitted to hurl the ball at extreme velocities. Fastpitch is an Olympic and collegiate sport with its own set of rules and regulations, which prospective umpires must learn in order to officiate a fastpitch game. The ASA Fastpitch School imparts these specifics over a two day period.
