Indoor Softball Hitting Drills

While softball practice is preferable outdoors, weather does not always permit this in wintery locations. Making good use of indoor practice time is essential; space and time is often shared with others, which can result in designated practice periods. Many indoor spaces are also expensive to rent out. Practicing several different indoor softball hitting drills will prevent your team from simply going through the motions, and will keep players uptempo and conditioned.
  1. Bounce Toss

    • Work on batting stance by bouncing a tennis ball to a hitter's specific contact point.

Two players are required for this drill. One player bounces a tennis ball to her partner (the batter), and the batter hits the ball into a net. When the tosser releases the ball, the batter takes her batting stance by turning her front knee and front shoulder inward, the same way she would when a pitcher in a real game starts her windup. This drill focuses on proper batting stances.

    Wiffle Balls

    • Practice hitting Wiffle balls with softball bats in a corner of the practice space. One player tosses the Wiffle balls to a hitter, who will hit the Wiffle balls into a net. Wiffle balls are smaller, lighter and harder to hit, which makes the batter keeping his eye on the ball important.

    Hitting Tees

    • Hit softballs into a net off a batting tee. Hitting off the tee works swing fundamentals and offers more repetition than a pitching machine can. Set up several different tees so almost the whole team can practice at once, with one player placing the ball on the tee while the other hits. This allows for constant motion.
