How Do You Juice a Softball Bat?

Juicing a softball bat means altering the bat from its factory-produced form to make the softball go farther with more power when it is struck. Increasing power and distance is especially attractive to a hitter who has been struggling at the plate or a power hitter who wants more distance from the ball. Juicing a softball bat involves shaving the inside of the bat's barrel.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cap from the barrel end of the softball bat. Do this by placing the flat edge of the screwdriver between the aluminum bat and the barrel end cap. Gently pry the end cap loose in several places. Do not force the cap, or you will damage the aluminum bat. Once the cap pops off, set it aside.

    • 2

Secure the carbide-tipped boring bar to the lathe.

    • 3

Slide the barrel end of the softball over the boring bar so it is resting on the lathe.

    • 4

Fire up the lathe. Move the softball bat up and down against the carbide-tipped boring bar so the internal aluminum is shaved evenly throughout the barrel. You'll need less than a minute to shave off a significant amount of aluminum.

    • 5

Turn off the lathe and remove the freshly juiced softball bat.

    • 6

Using the rubber mallet, gently hammer the end cap back onto the barrel end of the bat until it is secure.
