How to Measure Softball Bat Size

A softball bat is measured by weight, length, weight drop, barrel length and bat taper. There is no formula for which bat is best for you, only general guidelines. The standard units for bat measurements are inches, or fractions of an inch, for length and ounces for weight. The bat that is best for you will depend on your size and hitting style.

Subtract the weight from the length to find the weight drop. The weight and length are listed on the bat. For example, if the bat is 32 inches long and weighs 24 ounces, it has a weight drop of -8.

Measure the barrel size. This is the diameter of the bat on the hitting end. Most softball bats are about 2.5 inches. The larger the diameter, the wider the sweet spot, but the heavier the bat.

Measure the bat taper. This is the diameter of the bat at the handle. Most bats have a 31/32 inch taper.
