ASA Girls Softball Rules

There are rules for Amateur Softball Association (ASA), a girls fast-pitch softball association.
  1. Players and Coaches

    • Teams consist of at least nine players and one coach. The pitcher can be replaced in the batting lineup with a designated hitter who does not play in the field. The minimum age a player is eligible to play is 9 years old.

    Game

    • Games last seven innings with the home team playing in the field first. The game will end if one team is ahead by 15 runs or more after three innings or if one team is ahead by eight runs or more after five innings. A tie will be broken by playing extra innings until one team wins.

    Stealing Bases

    • A baserunner's foot can come off the base to steal the next one only after the pitcher has released the ball.

    Pitch

    • The pitcher must deliver the underhand pitch after two arm rotations. At the point of release, the pitcher must have one foot on the pitcher's plate.

    Equipment

    • Teams and coaches must wear consistent uniforms. Batters will wear an ASA approved helmet, covering both ears. Metal cleats are not permitted. Bats are usually aluminum and can be no longer than 34 inches. Bases are set in the diamond formation, 60 feet apart. The outfield fence will be 150 to 225 feet from home plate for under 18 girls' leagues (not less than 200 feet for over 18 women's leagues).
