How to Make Contact With a Softball Swing

Hitting a softball can be just as hard -- or harder -- than making contact with a baseball. The fastest softball pitch has been clocked at 104 mph, speedier than almost all Major League Baseball pitches. The keys to making contact with the ball, as with any skill, are practice and technique. Go through a few drills to get a feel for swinging before you put your talent to work in a real game.

Instructions

    • 1

Get into position for hitting. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Bend your knees and hips slightly. Make sure you're feeling balanced.

    • 2

Grip the bat so that the second row of your knuckles on both hands line up.

    • 3

Dip your front shoulder slightly lower than your back shoulder. Keep your eyes focused on the pitcher until the ball is released.

    • 4

Step forward slightly when the ball is released, your toes pointing toward first base.

    • 5

Keep your eye on the ball as it approaches. Pivot your hips and rotate on the ball of your back foot.

    • 6

Extend your arms and wrists to meet the ball. Keep your weight over your back knee. Your front leg should be straight. Swing through the ball, not to the ball.
