How to Motivate Your Softball Team

In many competitive sports, motivation isn't always a problem. At the competitive level, each athlete has likely practiced for untold hours and beaten out competition to earn a spot on the team. While some softball leagues are competitive, many others are recreational. As such, some players on these teams may lack motivation and require a friendly reminder from another player on the team. Whether you're the captain or a senior member of the team, you can motivate your teammates through talk and actions.

Instructions

    • 1

Offer encouraging words to the players on your team, especially those who are struggling. In softball, a player may get in a slump and have trouble hitting for games on end. He'll be feeling the pressure, so a kind word or two about how he'll get over the slump will help him feel at ease. When he knows his teammates are behind him, he'll be even more motivated to succeed.

    • 2

Remind the players on your team of past successes or victories when the team is struggling and needs some motivation. If the team has been together for considerable time, remind the players how you won a championship a few years ago or beat a previously undefeated team.

    • 3

Motivate your teammates by playing hard and letting your play speak for you. A player who is lacking in motivation will want to play harder when she sees you sliding into bases, diving to get balls and even getting hit with a pitch. This type of leadership is non verbal but can be effective.

    • 4

Remind players about the fun you'll have after the game or after the season concludes, especially if things end on a winning note. After each game, you may go out for pizza or to a player's house for a barbecue. Remind your peers how much fun you'll have if everyone is in good spirits following a victory.

Play a song in the dugout or locker room prior to the game that will pump up the players and make them want to succeed. The song you select should be relevant to the age of the players, but classics such as "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor are always ideal for getting the blood pumping.
