Types of Air Rifle Pellets
-
Domed Pellets
-
These pellets, so-called because of their rounded head, are aerodynamically efficient and can reach longer distances. They are well-suited for general shooting or casual target practice. Their high ballistic coefficients (which means they have greater force when striking a target) also serve well for hunting and pest control.
Pointed Pellets
-
This variety has a pointed shape which facilitates deeper penetration upon striking a target. This also makes them useful in pest control or hunting. They function better in light- and medium-powered air rifles than in magnums or super-magnums.
Wadcutter Pellets
-
Wadcutter pellets are also sometimes referred to as target pellets. Their flat heads make them well-suited for shooting paper targets, and the small, clean holes they leave upon impacting the paper make it easier to score. One drawback of wadcutters is their short range. They are easily susceptible to trajectory interference by wind and are best used at ranges of 20 yards or less.
Hollow Point Pellets
-
Hollow points are high-impact pellets that are popular for small-game hunting and pest control due to their hollow tips. However, the shape of the heads make them susceptible to wind currents and they lose accuracy over longer distances.
