Black Powder Shooting Tips
-
Follow Specific Steps
-
Black-powder shooting requires a very specific loading and shooting procedure. Set up your system according to the manufacturer's instructions and the type of black-powder gun you are shooting. Familiarize yourself with the method used for your gun, and practice it until you feel proficient. If you are not an experienced black-powder shooter it is recommended that you work with someone -- and learn the basics -- from someone who is.
Powder Tips
-
Always use the type of black powder recommended for your weapon. Never mix different types of black powder together, or use an unknown gun powder. Pour out only enough powder for the immediate work; use exact measurements when loading. Keep your powder in a tightly closed, air-tight container that is marked well for safety. Brush up any spilled powder with a broom or dust pan. Do not use a vacuum; a fire could result.
Loading A Black Powder Rifle
-
Set your gun on a work surface and arrange your shooting supplies. Cock the hammer to half-cock. Measure and pour powder into the muzzle of your rifle. Use a pre-lubricated patch -- or soak a patch in lube -- and squeeze out excess until it is barely damp. Center the patch on the muzzle, and place the ball on top. The patch must wrap the sides of the ball as it is loaded. Load the projectile into the muzzle with the short starter, followed by the ramrod. Ensure the ball and patch are seated firmly in the powder. Cap the nipple with one cap. Bring the hammer to full-cock when you are ready to aim and shoot.
Safety
-
Always wear safety glasses designed for shooting when using your black-powder gun. Never smoke when shooting or loading, or near the black powder and loading materials. Don't shoot when you have been drinking alcohol, or are under the influence of any medications or drugs. Be alert, and don't use your black-powder weapon if you are tired or drowsy.
