Can I Use Synthetic Oil on an Air Gun?
-
Oil Types
-
Use only synthetic oils. Always use a synthetic oil when lubricating an air gun. Regular oil can foul the inside of a spring piston in air rifles, because the friction of the piston creates heat and emulsifies the oil in the chamber. Gun shops and most hobby supplies stores sell synthetic oils designed specifically for air guns.
Where To Oil
-
Oil should be used sparingly to lubricate the spring chamber and the piston of the air gun. On a CO2-powered air gun, use one drop of oil on the needle that punctures the cartridge. Use oil to lightly coat the inside of a barrel, and rub the barrel dry with cloth patches.
How Much Oil To Use
-
Only a few drops of oil are needed to keep an air gun properly lubricated. Be careful not to use more oil than is necessary to coat the exterior of the spring chamber and the piston.
How Often To Oil
-
Oil should be added every 300 to 1,000 shots, or as the spring chamber becomes dry to the touch. Hinges should be oiled every 300 to 500 shots. Barrels should be oiled as necessary to clear debris and lead residue.
