How to Mount Deer Sheds

Bucks lose their antlers between the end of winter and early spring. The antlers fall off naturally and are called "sheds." The antlers are rarely lost at the same time, so it can be difficult to find a matched pair of sheds. If you hunt the same property year after year, you may find sheds from the same deer that show the progressive growth of the antlers from each season. Some sheds may be intact, while others may show damage from rodents. Whether you plan on mounting a series of sheds or just one, it is an easy process.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a plaque that is the right size to complement your sheds. The plaque should be slightly larger than the shed. The darker color of the plaque will show off the lighter-colored sheds.

    • 2

Clean the sheds with a stiff cleaning brush to remove any dirt and debris. If the sheds have mud or damp soil on them, let them dry before brushing.

    • 3

Remove any dirt stains by wiping the sheds with a solution of ½ cup bleach and ½ cup water. Let the sheds dry.

    • 4

Position each shed on the plaque. Make a mark on the plaque under the base of each shed.

    • 5

Drill a 1/8-inch pilot hole through each of the marks on the plaque. Place one shed at a time in position, and drill another pilot hole through the back of the plaque, using the existing hole, into the base of the shed. Repeat for the opposite shed.

    • 6

Apply a drop of epoxy glue into the holes in the bases of the sheds. Hold the sheds in the correct position, over the holes in the plaque, and insert wood screws from the back of the plaque into the bases of the sheds.

    • 7

Screw the wood screws into the bases of the sheds using a screwdriver. Screw just until snug and do not overtighten.
