Rules for Flying With a Gun in Your Luggage

Going through airport security is one of the most dreaded processes for travelers. If you are traveling with a firearm, it is especially important that you follow all the rules set forth by the Transportation Security Administration. Here are the basics you need to know.
  1. Packaging

    • All firearms must be carried in a hard-sided container that can be locked. The weapon must not be loaded. According to TSA rules, a locked container is one that cannot be opened by anyone other than you.

    Ammunition

    • Ammunition must be placed in containers specifically designed for carrying it; these containers must be made from fiber, wood or metal. Ammunition may be carried in the same case as the weapon.

    Declare Your Weapon

    • When arriving at the check-in counter, inform the ticket agent that you have a firearm to declare. Firearms cannot be carried onto the plane and must be checked. The ticket agent will have to inspect the weapon.

    Check With Your Airline

    • Consult your airline's specific rules regarding transportation of guns and ammunition to ensure you are not delayed.

    Fines

    • Failure to comply with the government standards of traveling with a firearm can result in fines of $10,000 and possible criminal charges.
