How to Shoot Moving 3D Pop-Up Targets

In boot camp, Marines begin their experience with pop-up targets from 100, 200 and 500 yards. They learn the basics of marksmanship on non-moving targets. In combat situations, the enemy rarely stands still. To achieve "one shot, one kill" accuracy, the Marines refine their training with 3D pop up targets. These ranges can be run either by individual Marines or a fire team.

Instructions

    • 1

Move your left foot forward. Place two thirds of your weight on it. Your right foot is 20 centimeters away from the left one.

    • 2

Imagine a straight line between your eye and the target. Hold the rifle, butt down, so the tip is just below this line. Begin your swing by bringing the rifle up and pushing your leading hand toward the target, with the butt rotating upward. Pull it into your shoulder. Rest your cheek against the stock.

    • 3

Slide your left hand forward, 8 to 10 centimeters, with the forefinger extended and resting under the barrel. The right elbow is at your side - no more than 45 degrees from horizontal.

    • 4

Swing your rifle to a point just ahead of your target. This is a full body motion beginning at the lower back and hips.

    • 5

Shoot as you swing the rifle, continuing the swing after your shot. This is "following through" on the shot. You are in position to take another shot if your first one misses.
