Cold-Weather River Rafting

1
Check to see if your outfitter rents wetsuits, which are the best protection against cold weather and cold water. If rentals aren't available on site, try renting or purchasing one before you leave. Splash jackets are also a good bet in cold weather and will at least keep your torso dry.
-
2
Wear a layer of clothing under your splash jacket or over your wetsuit that keeps you warm, including fleece, polypropylene, neoprene or wool tops. These fabrics wick water away from the skin.
-
3
Remember to don a tight-fitting winter hat made of wool or fleece and an old pair of tennis shoes or running shoes for your feet. Wear fleece or wool socks to keep your feet warm.

4
Wear a swimsuit under your clothing, since you are bound to get wet anyway, and you might discover the perfect swimming spot on your rafting trip.
-
5
Pack nylon shorts and a T-shirt to wear over your bathing suit. The T-shirt will keep your shoulders from getting sunburned and the shorts should be made of a quick-drying material.
-
6
Protect your feet with old tennis shoes or sandals that grip on the bottom. Wear a tight-fitting hat to protect you from the sun, such as a baseball cap or a hat with an adjustable strap.
-
7
Wear sunglasses, but make sure they have a strap that you can tighten, so you don't lose them when the rafting gets rough.
