How to Make a Mat for Grappling

Grappling is a part of various forms of martial arts. From wrestling to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the ability to hold and control your opponent is vital to combat. Grappling techniques are taught on soft mats to help with the impact of throws and to act as a cushion while training on the ground. These specialized mats are available through vendors; however, you can also build your own mats for use in your home on your own time.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase puzzle mats from a local store. These mats are available in sections that you can connect together to make one large mat. They are also available in various colors so you can obtain mats that match a particular theme.

    • 2

Connect the mats together to fit into the selected training area. Lay the mats down before connecting them together because they are easier to move. The puzzle mats will snap in place when you connect them.

    • 3

Hold the connected sections together using the adhesive tape, then smooth out the tape so it does not rip during use.

    • 4

Test the new grappling mat to make sure it fits your needs. None of the sections should separate during use. If you notice any areas that are beginning to split, reconnect the mats and use more adhesive tape to hold them together.
