Mouthguard Preparation

Mouthguards are rubber or acrylic gum and tooth protectors, used by athletes to prevent mouth injuries. They can also be used to prevent sleepers from grinding their teeth, which is a common problem caused by stress. Some mouthguards are specifically made to fit a particular person's teeth, but the most common varieties are "boil and bite" types. Preparing a mouthguard for use can be done within several minutes, but must be done carefully to both prevent injury and fit the guard as accurately as possible.

Instructions

    • 1

Boil water in a pot and have a glass of cold water next to it. The heat from the boiling water helps mold the mouthguard, while the colder water helps prevent it from burning your gums.

    • 2

Turn off the heat for the boiling water and drop the mouthguard into it for 60 seconds.

    • 3

Pull the mouthguard out of the hot water with tongs to prevent burning yourself. Dip the mouthguard quickly into the cold water, then place it immediately into your mouth.

    • 4

Bite down firmly on the mouthguard while sucking, to mold the rubber to your teeth and gums. Hold the mouthguard in place for 2 minutes.

    • 5

Trim the top of the mouthguard with scissors to eliminate any excess material that may rub uncomfortably against your gums.
