1
Evaluate the squash racket’s weight. While light rackets are popular, more expensive and may appear to be of higher quality, they are most appropriate for experienced players. Beginners often lack the strength and control necessary to generate momentum with a lighter racket. For players with a fast swing, the weight of heavier rackets will help control the ball. Choose a weight based on your experience level.

2
Check the squash racket for balance. Many squash rackets are either “head heavy” or “head light.” Try out the racket on the court to determine if the racket feels balanced. If the head feels unnaturally light or heavy, it is probably not the racket for you. Keep in mind that some people like a racket that is “head heavy,” while others prefer a more evenly balanced racket.

3
Test the squash racket for stiffness. Try out several rackets and compare the stiffness of their strings. Is there a lot of give or very little? Which racket gives you the best shot? Stiffer rackets are more difficult to control, but are superior for power and accuracy. Ultimately, your racket’s stiffness should reflect what is most comfortable and effective for you.
-
4
Look at the size and shape of the squash racket’s head. A larger racket head can increase the power of your shot and help beginners make contact with the ball.
-
5
Examine the squash racket's material. Titanium rackets, while popular, can break more easily than rackets made of heavier, more durable materials.
-
6
Use the squash racket on the court. Play several games with the racket to really get a feel for it. In the end, an expensive racket that doesn’t feel comfortable will not benefit your game.
