The Best Ways to Care for Your Swim Goggles

People use swim goggles in pools and in natural bodies of water, and they use them for snorkeling, scuba diving or just to keep the water out of their eyes. But whatever you use them for, you must take care of your goggles, just like people who wear glasses must take care of their eyewear. Properly maintenance can save you money, as it reduces the frequency with which you'll have to replace your goggles.
  1. Storage

    • Store goggles in a hard case to prevent them from being stepped on and broken. If you do not have a hard case, store them in a dry, cool location that is out of the direct sunlight.

    Hands Off

    • Do not touch the the goggles' inside lenses. The lenses contain a coating that helps reduce fog, and the oils in your fingers can damage the coating. Additionally, by rubbing the inside of the lenses with your finger or a towel, you increase the risk of scratching them, which will reduce their usefulness for seeing underwater.

    Cold Water

    • Placing hot water on the goggles can damage the strap, nose clip and lens. Use only cold, fresh water to rinse the goggles. Avoid spraying chemicals or other products on them. Rinse the goggles with fresh water after each use. And if they fog up while you are using them, remove the goggles, rinse them with cold water and empty the water from them.

    Dry

    • Dry the goggles completely before putting them away. The best way to dry them is to lay them flat and allow them to air-dry, according to Swimmer.com.au. Do not leave them in the sun or use any artificial means of drying them, such as a hair dryer. Drying is important because it lessens the risk of mold and bacteria growing on the goggles.
