How to Swim With Kickboards & Fins

Swimming with a kickboard and fins is an exercise routine that is not technical but develops leg muscles and the cardiovascular system. Swimming with fins and a kickboard develops kicking strength in beginning swimmers before they tackle more advanced techniques. The kickboard provides a stable platform and increases comfort in the water while the fins increase the strength required for each kick. The fins also increase speed in the water.

Instructions

Wear a pair of goggles to protect your eyes and maintain a clear field of vision. Sit on the edge of the pool and strap the fins on your feet while hanging your legs over the edge. This prevents the need for awkward walking with the fins.

    • 2

Slide your body into the pool while holding the edge of the wall with one hand. Place your chest on the board to control the board and float with little effort. Face the round edge of the board forward.

    • 3

Grab the front, round side of the board with both hands and rest your forearms on top of the board. Shift your chest back towards the base of the board and assume a swimming position.

    • 4

Kick your legs in an alternating sequence to propel yourself forward. Keep the fins submerged while kicking to maximize efficiency and prevent excessive splashing.

    • 5

Make small adjustments to your position while kicking to maximize comfort. Adjust your grip to the sides of the board and hold the board forward to swim with your head submerged. The submerged position is used to practice breathing to the side while swimming.
