How to Get Ready for Swim Tryouts

"I want to be able to look back and say, 'I've done everything I can, and I was successful," 14-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps once said about his swimming career. You should take a similar approach when getting ready for swim team tryouts. Phelps exemplifies focus and determination when it comes to preparation, and the results show. And while it's unlikely that you'll achieve the same sorts of triumphs in your swim career, success is all about being the best you can be.

Adjust your diet to one that promotes muscle growth and helps prevent cramping. A healthy breakfast is a must in the days and weeks leading up to tryouts. Eat foods such as fruits, whole wheat toast, and egg whites.

    • 2

Contact the coach of the team and ask for tips. The coach will inform you of which strokes will be included in the tryout. A previous relationship with the swim coach can prove helpful during tryouts.

Create a workout based around the strokes required at the tryout. Spend at least 30 minutes in the pool in the weeks leading up to tryouts. Run and lift weights to supplement your work in the pool.

Get a good night's rest the night before tryouts. Arrive early to tryouts and get in a good stretch.
